High PR links are shite

High PR links are shite

Or more accurately why links from a Low PR page are more beneficial then links from a High PR page.

On the site and on the blogosphere as a whole it is seen as gospel that links coming in to the site are good. The higher the PR of the page the more beneficial it is. I say not.

For the purpose of this article I am concentrating on sites and blogs that have do-follow enabled in their comment section.

Though before I elaborate on the crux of the matter I feel a small rehash of the Page Rank algorithm is necessary.

Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google looks not only at the volume of votes; among 100 other aspects it also analyses the page that casts the vote.

Now logically it would seem that if Google look at the page that casts the vote therefore the higher the PR of the page the beneficial it is?

Again we must look in detail at the Google algorithm.

Now no-one really knows how it actually works but we can make educated guesses. One set equation for PR as is as follows:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + …+ PR(tn)/C(tn)).

What does this mean?

‘t1-tn’ are pages linking to page A, C is the number of outbound links that a page has and ‘d’ is a damping factor, usually set to 0.85.

You whizzes out there may be thinking now ‘ahhh i get it now,’ for the other humans out there like me! I’ll try and explain.

What it basically means what you PR is derived from other pages linking to you (as established before), and each link passes a certain amount to you. Now the amount is passes is worked out as:

The page PR x 0.85 / out going links

Therefore the more links on a page = less ‘PR juice’ passed to each one.

So this lending credence to my initial point as the high ‘do-follow’ pages will be bombarded with comments as so to ‘milk it’ while the lower PR4/3 etc are not so much. Therefore the lower PR pages with 10 comments will be passing more ‘juice’ to you then a higher PR page with 100.

Here endeth my interpretation.
